博士的今义是指学位中最高的一级，是对攻读博士学位的研究生的称呼，同样也可用来称呼已获得博士学位的人员。在国外特指获得过博士学位的人，在中国则把博士生也称为某某博士。此外，古代的博士也是一种官职，最早出现在战国时期，负责掌通古今、传授经学等事务。
