历史上周培公的真实死因是患病而死。他因为是汉人，受到满族官员的排挤，加之康熙对他有所顾忌，把他流放到蒙古一带10来年，天寒地冻的，加之心情抑郁，最终一病不起。虽然现实中的周培公是一个小人物，但是在影视中他的形象得到了很大的提升。从他受到皇帝任用之后就一心为朝廷办事，哪怕到生命的最后一刻也不曾松懈。周培公晚年过的很凄惨，至死都没有落得一个安享晚年的结局。
